Career Change Stories
Recently completed an MSc in Psychology and am looking to switch careers and do something else.

Am 40 next year but better late than never - am looking at market research as one possible avenue as I am a nosey cunt.

Anyone else taken the plunge? How did it go? Advice?

Abuse also welcome x

Re: Career Change Stories
Try and use the experience and skills that you have to break in rather than go for a complete change. You'd need to have a CV focussed and aimed at what they want but you also need to show that you have other value from your previous career.

It can be hard at the best of times but currently it will probably be more difficult to move into a new domain. So if you go for Market Researcher or MR Analyst you can probably show that you have existing skills, knowledge and abilities that would be good for those roles and you want to use your experience to get an advantage over a career starter.

Re: Career Change Stories
Spent 26 years in the motor trade from apprentice to director of a group of dealers. Stupid hours, stress, responsible for big targets etc etc. One missed family holiday too many and the Mrs cried enough ~ its the job or the family.

Mrs is into dogs so we bought a pet food franchise in a virgin territory with zero customers. 2 years in we have over 400 and a nice little income. Nowhere near my old salary but my life is transformed. Should have done it years ago.

Changed from working in IT software development to being an IT teacher in 2003 ( age 27) 5 years later I switched from IT to maths and I've never been happier.
1) teaching is great
2) maths is much more interesting than IT

Tube is different to overground trains
Tube is a lot harder and closed shop to get into

Re: Career Change Stories
Didn't know that funk.

Know a couple of tube drivers and they were both station staff for years before they managed to become train drivers, that's why I asked.

Re: Career Change Stories
Mashed I applied for about 8different rail companies in London and surrounding counties, took a couple of years before I got the call from one out of Victoria.
I put on forms applying for driver only.
Some firms used to try and employ from current staff but nowadays most new drivers are from the outside.
I'm a train driving instructor and see this first hand..

You've always come across as a know-it-all opinionated twonk whenever I have read your posts before - it'd be a shame to get all humble now...

Re: Career Change Stories
Can you just "become a train driver" now?

I looked into it a few years ago (longer than 6 thinking about it) and the only path seemed to be joining a rail firm and working your way up from station staff which seemed to take a few years.
